Debris Netting Systems

Looking to protect your workforce on site? Contact us today.

Debris netting is a fine-mesh containment system that stops small materials — dust, fragments, offcuts, screws and nails — escaping the working area and reaching the public or operatives below. It is the system of choice for urban and public-facing scaffold and facade works. Red Safety Netting supplies and installs debris netting nationwide for principal contractors and main contractors.

What debris netting does

Debris netting uses a much finer mesh than fall arrest or vertical protection netting — typically in the 2–10mm range, with the finer 2–5mm meshes capable of holding back screws, nails and small fragments. Fitted to scaffold and perimeters, it contains the small material and dust that controlled drop zones and edge protection alone will not catch. It is a containment measure for materials; it is not designed or rated to arrest the fall of a person and must never be used as a substitute for a fall arrest net.

Why choose Red Safety Netting

  • The correct mesh for the risk. We match mesh size to what needs containing — finer 2–5mm mesh where screws, nails and fine fragments must be held back on public-facing facades, coarser mesh where only larger debris is a concern.
  • Public and pedestrian protection. Debris netting is essential on urban sites where scaffold overhangs pavements, roads or neighbouring property and the public must be protected from falling fragments.
  • Installed and coordinated correctly. We fit debris netting to the scaffold safely and account for its effect on the structure — fine mesh adds significant wind and snow loading, which must be considered in the scaffold design and inspection regime.
  • Part of a complete package. Debris netting can be combined with fall arrest netting, vertical protection, edge protection and access from one FASET-accredited supplier.

Our debris netting service

  • Site assessment — we identify what must be contained and specify the correct mesh and layout.
  • Supply and installation — debris netting fitted to the scaffold or perimeter by competent operatives.
  • Loading awareness — we account for the added wind and snow loading fine mesh places on the scaffold.
  • Inspection and removal — monitored through the works and removed, with debris cleared, on completion.

Applications

  • Urban and city-centre scaffold over pavements and roads
  • Facade, cladding and refurbishment works
  • Public-facing and occupied buildings
  • Sites adjoining neighbouring property
  • Any scaffold where small materials, fragments or dust must be contained

Debris netting is not a fall arrest net

It is important to be clear: debris netting contains materials, it does not catch people. Its fine mesh and lighter construction are not designed or tested to absorb the energy of a falling person. Where worker fall protection is required, a horizontal fall arrest net to BS EN 1263-1, edge protection or another suitable measure must be used. Adding a debris mesh overlay to a fall arrest net also significantly increases wind and snow loading and makes inspection harder, so it must be planned and monitored by a competent person. As a full-range FASET-accredited specialist, we will specify the right combination for your site.

Debris Netting FAQs

What is the difference between debris netting and a safety net?

Debris netting is a fine mesh that contains small falling materials — dust, fragments, screws and nails. A safety net (fall arrest net to BS EN 1263-1) is a heavy-duty net designed to catch a falling person. Debris netting is not rated for fall arrest and must never be used in place of a safety net.

What mesh size does debris netting use?

Typically between 2mm and 10mm. Finer 2–5mm mesh is used where screws, nails and small fragments must be held back — common on urban facades where public protection is critical. Coarser mesh may be used where only larger debris is a concern.

When is debris netting required?

On scaffold and facade works where small materials, fragments or dust could fall to the area below — particularly urban and public-facing sites where scaffold overhangs pavements, roads or neighbouring property.

Does debris netting affect the scaffold?

Yes. Fine debris mesh does not let wind or snow pass through easily, so it adds significant loading to the scaffold. This must be accounted for in the scaffold design and monitored during high winds or snow, which is why correct specification and competent installation matter.

Can you supply debris netting with other fall protection?

Yes. As a FASET-accredited specialist across the full range, we can combine debris netting with fall arrest netting, vertical protection, edge protection and access — specifying the correct systems for each risk on your site.

Do you install nationwide?

Yes. Red Safety Netting installs debris netting across the UK for principal contractors and main contractors.
